Riot Games give update on in-game currency for League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, and more
Riot Games celebrated the 10-year anniversary of League of Legends last month and took the time to announce several innovations that would be sure to shake up the way that players interact with the fictional world of Runeterra.
The company unveiled plans for a League of Legends experience on mobile and console devices, as well as the development of a digital card-based strategy game named Legends of Runeterra. Teamfight Tactics, Riot Games’ incredibly popular auto-battler game, will also come to mobile devices in 2020.
Until now, Riot Games was widely known as the publisher that could have done without the “s” in their name. The company has solely relied on the income generated from League of Legends, the multiplayer online battle arena game released in 2009, for ten years now.
Players purchase Riot Points (RP) in League of Legends and use this in-game currency to unlock different champions, skins, and in-game cosmetics. Additionally, players can also unlock certain elements of the game by spending Blue Essence (BE) and Orange Essence (OE), which can be earned in-game.
Naturally, with the announcement of a variety of new games coming to different platforms for the first time, players began to wonder if their existing in-game currency would be eligible for use on other games and devices.
Following the announcements made during League’s 10-year anniversary, the publisher announced that Riot Points would immediately be renamed to RP.
“the team’ve made a few big announcements in the last few days, including the reveal of some new Riot games,” Riot’s statement read. “With that in mind, the team wanted to let you know that the team won’t be using Riot Points across all the present and future games.”
In a recent “Ask Riot” post, the publisher provided more details surrounding the use of in-game currency games such as League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics and Legends of Runeterra on different devices.
