Get ready to leave Earth behind and embark on an interstellar journey because the highly anticipated action role-playing game, Starfield, is finally coming our way.
A new intellectual property developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks, Starfield has been making waves in the gaming community since its announcement during Bethesda’s E3 presentation in 2018.
Here’s everything we know so far.
Starfield Release Date and Platforms
First thing’s first: when can we actually play this game? Starfield is set to launch on September 6, 2023. As for where you can play it, it’s coming to Windows and Xbox Series X/S.
Starfield Gameplay
Think of Starfield as an open-world space odyssey. Switch between a first-person and third-person perspective as you journey through an area within the Milky Way galaxy. Players can land on over 1,000 planets, moons, and space stations, all teeming with life, landscapes, and opportunities for exploration.
Your player character is a silent protagonist, but the customization options are vast. Everything from body type, voice type, appearance, and background, to optional traits can be tinkered with. As you level up, new abilities can be unlocked in the game’s five distinct skill trees: Physical, Social, Combat, Science, and Tech.
Gear up with various weapons to combat adversaries and equip jetpacks (or boost-packs) to navigate challenging environments. Planetary gravity varies, which may affect combat. Scan planets for resources, construct outposts for research and crafting, and even establish your own space-faring fleet.
Starfield Setting
The stage is set in an area extending outward from our Solar System, known as The Settled Systems. The game’s backdrop is an uneasy peace following a conflict between the two largest factions, the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective. Players assume the role of a member of Constellation, an organization of space explorers.
Starfield Development
Starfield marks a major milestone for Bethesda as it is their first new intellectual property in over 25 years. Coined as “Skyrim in space” by director Todd Howard, the game’s concept has been in the works since the release of Fallout 4 in November 2015.
The studio’s ambition to create a space-themed game stretches back to 1994. Now, almost thirty years later, they’re bringing their dream to fruition. Starfield distinguishes itself from other sci-fi games with its unique “NASA punk” theme. Humanity’s future is depicted with technology originating from various NASA space missions.
So, pack your space bags, folks. We’re not just going to a galaxy far, far away. We’re going to over a thousand of them.
