New dates have been announced for the Apex Legends Global Series Online Tournaments. OT #5 will take place Saturday, May 2, 2020, through May 3, 2020, and OT #6 will start May 30, 2020, and end on May 31, 2020. EA and Respawn Entertainment moved the tournaments one day earlier in order to accommodate the schedules of both the competitors and fans watching online.
The tournament saw noteworthy growth between OT #2 and OT #3, having tripled reported Average Minute Audience on Twitch and YouTube in 14 days. EA built cloud-based broadcast production technology to deliver high-quality, competitive online experiences. The company first used this new technology, which operates fully remotely, for the Finals of OT #2, on March 23, 2020.
Competitive Gaming Division Commissioner on Apex Legends, John Nelson said, “We’re always seeking to better serve our players and fans, and that has never been more true than it is today. We wanted to give our community the opportunity to continue to play more Apex Legends and get competitions back up and running as soon as possible while ensuring the safety of all players, viewers, and staff. The early response has been outstanding, and we’re looking forward to bringing great entertainment to even more fans with our upcoming tournaments.”
OT#3, which took place earlier in April, offered points to players making their way up the leaderboard and $100K in prizes. The Finals for Apex Legends Global Series Online Tournaments OT#4 in Europe and North America streamed live on the Apex Legends on April 20, 2020. Favorite teams in OT #4 included the recently dethroned, five-time champions TSM as well as top contenders Complexity, Gambit Esports, Luminosity Gaming, Natus Vincere, North, Rogue, Team Liquid, and Virtus.pro. The tournaments are averaging more than 600 teams.
